The information and dates provided on these pages are offered as a service to persons interested in applying for examinations. While the Office of State Examiner attempts to provide the most up-to-date information, application deadlines may change as the result of civil service board action without the knowledge of this office. Therefore, the accuracy of this information may be verified only by contacting the civil service board representative where you wish to apply to take the examination. As of August 1, 2020 the Office of State Examiner is now responsible for calling for, accepting applications, administering  and maintaining the eligibility list for Entry Level Firefighter and Entry Level Police Officer Exams.

As of March of 2023 the Office of State Examiner will now be offering statewide testing for the Entry Level Communications and Jailer exams.

The competitive exam scores for Jailer, Secretary to the Chief, Departmental Records Clerk, Entry Level Fire Communications Officer and Entry Level Police Communications Officer are transferable. For additional information on these entry level examinations, please click here

It is recommended that testing applicants wear proper face covering during examinations. Proper face covering consists of:

  • a covering that fits snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
  • secured with ties or ear loops
  • includes multiple layers of fabric
  • allows for breathing without restrictions
The OSE does not allow known COVID positive individuals to take exams.  This is to ensure the safety of other applicants and our test administrator.

Effective March 5, 2020 test applicants will not be permitted to enter the examining room with a personal electronic or telecommunication device.  OSE personnel are not allowed to store an applicant’s device during the examination process. Prohibited devices include, but are not limited to:

  • cellular telephones
  • smart watches, pagers
  • body cameras
  • radios
  • iPads/Kindles or any like device
  • any other device capable of storing, sending, or receiving data.

In the event that an examining official discovers any applicant to have any of the previously mentioned devices in his/her possession during the examination process, the applicant will be immediately disqualified from the examination and asked to leave the exam site.
